Alright friends, I’m just going to get straight to the point here because I don’t remember the last time I was this excited about a candy. This one is for all my chocoholic, crunchy rice candy, M&M’s® fans out there. Are you ready for it?
Back by popular demand, I would like to reintroduce you to M&M’s® Crispy!!
Have you tried them? Oh man I cannot explain how excited I was to not only learn that after a ten year hiatus they are back in CVS stores, but that I would have an opportunity to share my experience with this crispy chocolate candy with you.
10 years ago, I remember picking up a bag at a local convenience store and falling madly in love with how the two textures (a crispy rice center surrounded by a smooth chocolate layer) are perfectly matched! Can you believe that? That’s how long it has been since M&M’s® has shared (what I believe to be) the best of M&M’s® candies. It’s been that long for me, and I still remember how much I liked them.
Needless to say, I was quick to jump at the opportunity to share this excitement with my readers so that you too can enjoy what so many of us M&M’s® Crispy fans have been missing. Where can you find them you ask? Head over to CVS where you can find M&M’s® Crispy bags in two sizes.
Here’s a coupon to take with you!
Personally, I find the individual sized bags handy when I know I’m going to have a busy day with errands and I got my little man with me. I usually take a lunch with us so I don’t have to buy fast food, but for having to run around town and being so patient with me on these trips, he deserves a special snack. So I make sure to pick up two individual bags before checking out at the register.
While you’re there, you can also pick up a larger bag for sharing with your friends or family, or for using in a dessert recipe like my Soft Serve Coconut Ice Cream below (I’ll get to that in a minute).
These large 9 ounce bags can be found in the candy aisle.
When I brought them home, I didn’t tell my husband what they were. He walked into the kitchen as I was measuring out the M&M’s® for my Soft Serve Coconut Ice Cream. He came up to the counter and instinctively picked up a couple (thinking they were regular M&M’s®), popped them into his mouth, and said nothing. Three seconds later, he swallowed the first two and said, “Wow, those are good!” “What are they?” I laughed and told him “they’re M&M’s® with a crispy rice center.” Before I knew it, both kids and my husband were quickly devouring them. I literally had to take the bag away! Good thing I bought two bags!
Now back to the Ice Cream recipe.
I grew up in a highly Latino populated neighborhood where most kids would spend the weekends and evenings hanging out in front of our houses and driveways, or in our yards coming up with our own random small adventures. My cousins who lived just a few houses down from me were always around. We used to walk to each others’ houses everyday and play for hours! One thing we always looked forward to as kids was when the ice cream trucks and paleteros would pass by. For me though, it was the bells of the paletero that I waited for.
I’d always ask for a paleta de jamaica or a paleta de coco. To this day, those are my top favorites. Other kids would choose the typical cartoon character popsicles with gumball eyes, or some other fruity or chocolate ice cream that you would typically see in a standard ice cream truck. Not me. I always went for jamaica or coco paleta. I LOVED those. Still do.
When I was asked to come up with a recipe using M&M’s® Crispy candies, the flavor of a paleta de coco was the first thing that came to mind. You know me, I had to throw in a Latin flair somehow! That’s what Spanglish Spoon is all about! The only difference here is that the paleta is more water based, whereas this Soft Serve Ice Cream is a creamy base. I hope you like it.
First, combine all the ingredients except the M&M’s® Crispy candies in a large sauce pot. With the burner on medium heat, whisk until it thickens and is creamy (about 7-8 minutes).
Do not let it boil! If it starts to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low. After about 7 or 8 minutes, turn off the heat, and let it cool a little – just enough to be able to transfer into a heat-safe bowl.
Once it’s cool enough to handle, transfer to a bowl or container with a lid and refrigerate until completely cooled. I recommend overnight. 24 hours is best! The same goes for your ice cream maker bowl. That definitely needs to be given at least 24 hours in the freezer.
Set up the ice cream maker and turn it on low speed. For the kitchenAid mixer that would be the stir setting. Slowly pour it all into the bowl as it is spinning. Let the ice cream churn for about 30 minutes.
When it’s done, transfer immediately into a freezer-safe bowl or container and mix in the broken pieces of M&M’s® Crispy candies.
Freeze covered for at least 5 hours for a soft serve texture, or 24 hours for a firmer ice cream.
Serve and top with a few more broken bits of M&M’s® Crispy candy.
It’s quite a process, but trust me, it’s worth it!
What other ice cream flavor do you think you would like with these M&M’s® Crispy candies?

What a beautiful recipe, I remember those days enjoying paletas from el paletero too! #client
O.M.G.!!!! This just made me super hungry for ice cream… and the crispy M&M’s ARE the best, I’m so glad someone else likes them as much as I do! Great stuff!
Lol! I thought I was crazy for remembering them when no one else around me did. I later found out through social media that there are A LOT of us who do. They’re my favorite M&M’s
Oh hell no, you didn’t just temp me to get some M&M’s and ice cream! Hell no!
I grew up in a predominantly spanish hood too, but we didn’t have driveways, we had the front of the building, and “La Pompa!” LOL..
Well I hope you at least had the paletero come around, lol! We actually shared the driveways because we lived in duplexes. We played in whichever driveway wasn’t packed with cars.
Thanks for stopping by Angel!
