This easy & budget friendly Dia de Los Muertos activity can be printed at home using cardstock paper. It’s a fun way to start a conversation with children about items that are placed on altars for Day of the Dead.
When I asked my 6-year-old what her favorite part about building our Altar was, I wasn’t surprised when she told me she enjoyed making the food and playing with the clay. She’s at that age where the smallest toys intrigue her, and anytime I’m cooking up something in the kitchen, she wants to help. Today’s post is a quick recap of the paper table & clay food that we made for our Dia de los Muertos altar. It is a super easy and budget friendly activity that requires supplies you can usually find at any store that sells crafts, or online.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Various colors of cardstock paper for the Paper Table Printable
- glue, scotch tape, or any double-sided tape
- scissors
- tape or stapler (to staple the legs in place)
- modeling clay
- toothpicks
- tissue paper scraps
- washi tape (optional)
Most people already have paper, but card stock is better. You can get it by the sheet at a craft store, or buy a multi-color pack from Walmart along with the sculpting clay. The rest of the materials are common things you probably have around the house such as glue, scissors, tissue paper, and any other collage materials that are small.
Print and fold the table along the dotted lines, then cut along the solid lines. Tape or staple each leg in place.

Use toothpicks for shaping and sculpting.
I used a small paint brush to glue the tissue flowers to the table but you don’t have to. I just found it to be easier to spread the glue that way for this particular project.
I love how my daughter added the sun to her altar.
This activity will keep your kiddos busy for a while! Preschoolers not so much. My two-year-old barely had the patience to make two little clay pieces. 😉
