You know what I love about a homemade pizza? I love that you can add almost anything to it and immediately have a warm meal for your whole family in one dish. I also love that it’s so easy to customize. It’s a meal everyone can be involved in. A household with young children especially, can appreciate the flexibility a homemade pizza can offer. What’s great about this pizza dough today is how quickly the bread rises. In 10 minutes time, you can prepare the dough right after breakfast and it will be ready to use by lunch.
2 1/2 cups flour
1 envelope Rapid Rise Instant Yeast
1 1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon crushed dried oregano (optional)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup warm water
Start by mixing the flour and Instant yeast in a large bowl. Make sure when you’re at the store getting the yeast packets that they say INSTANT. This is important if you want a quick rising dough.
Mix all the dry ingredients well.
Then add the warm water and olive oil.
Gently start to mix all the ingredients together by hand. Don’t forget to wash your hands first!
Once it starts to come together and is beginning to form a ball of dough, pour it all out onto a clean dry surface and knead the dough for 5 minutes. Here’s a quick YouTube video I found on how to knead dough in case you haven’t done this before.
By the end of 5 minutes you will have a pretty and soft ball of dough ready to start rising.
Place the dough inside a clean large bowl. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil on top of the dough and rub the oil all around the dough to give it a thin coat. Cover the bowl and set it aside. I like to set mine near the window where the most warmth and light come in to help it rise faster.
Once the pizza has at least doubled in size, it is ready to use. An hour should be good enough. The picture above is dough that rested for three hours.
Once it’s ready, you have to release all the gasses that are trapped inside the dough, so give it a soft punch and let it sit for a minute. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. In the meantime, prepare a baking sheet with a light sprinkle of cornmeal or parchment paper to lay the pizza dough on before baking. You probably can do without the parchment paper, I just felt like I needed it at the time. I may or may not have a parchment paper attachment.
Lay it flat and begin gently stretching the dough by hand until it is between 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick (depends how thick you want your pizza dough).
Poke holes all around with a fork to prevent the dough from bubbling too much while baking in the oven.
And begin topping! I usually let the kiddos fully take over on this part.
